10 ingredients that make CubeSensors incredibly smart about your home’s health

by Alja Isakovic

Ever wondered what goes inside one of our Cubes? As you might now, it’s pretty packed with sensors that measure temperature, humidity, air quality, noise, light and barometric pressure of the room it’s placed in.

The anatomy of a CubeSensors Cube

By shaking a Cube, you activate its subtle glow that shows the room’s overall health. Blue for a healthy room, red for a sad Cube that can give you practical advice on how to make your home healthier or your office more productive through the web app.

You can check a Cube’s measurements from anywhere in the world thanks to the build-in ZigBee wireless communication that relays the data to an internet connected base station.

The usage of ZigBee provides lower power consumption, which means that the built-in rechargeable battery can keep a Cube going for up to a month before needing a recharge. Another benefit is the scalability of the network, which ensures that each room in a big house or a large office building can get its own Cube.

Last but not least, CubeSensors also come with lots of love built-in. The magic ingredient that can be felt through the design of the product and the fact that we’ll be assembling the first Cubes ourselves, in Europe.

Are you excited to meet these beauties yet? We certainly are. The first Cubes start shipping worldwide to pre-orders made before May on December 16.

The story behind CubeSensors on Hack Things

by Alja Isakovic

The journey from an idea to a finished product is a long one. Back in April Marko, our CTO, spoke with Co.Labs about how we developed the first CubeSensors prototypes. Since then, we’ve had even more challenges to conquer. But we’re now almost ready to start shipping the final product.

You can read a bit more about what has been happening in the past few months in a guest blog post by Aleš, our CEO, on one of our favorite blogs. Head over to Hack Things right now if you’re interested in learning more about the process of building CubeSensors and seeing some exclusive behind the scene photos from our office:

“After two years we’re ready to ship something beautiful: a cutting edge product that improves peoples lives. It has amazing features that others don’t have. People can interact with it directly or use it as a heart for their intelligent home or office. It will improve peoples lives.”

CubeSensors were glowing bright at the Web Summit [VIDEO]

by Alja Isakovic

After a missed flight, an unplanned detour in London, 3 nerve-wracking security checks, the CubeSensors team finally landed in Dublin, Ireland on the eve of the Web Summit, the biggest tech conference in Europe. Luckily we made it through the journey with all the Cubes, so we were able to assemble them in our hotel room the same night.

Assembling CubeSensors in a Dublin hotel before the Web Summit

The next morning we missed breakfast to set up our STARTglobal stand #192. This was basically the first and last chance for our CTO Marko and designer Leon to pose so relaxed. For the next two days, we were swamped with visitors and delighted to be answering all the great questions we received about the Cubes.

CubeSensors CTO Marko and Designer Leon at the Web Summit stand

Aleš, our CEO, participated in the Real Bits, Brand New Pieces: Hacking Hardware panel on the Main stage. The panel was led by Max Chafkin and also featured Leap Motion CEO Michael Buckwald and MakerBot’s president Jennifer Lawton. You can watch their interesting discussion below.

In the meantime, Marko spoke to Wall Street Journal’s Ben Rooney, who was skeptical about the product at first, but came back home convinced. In the article, highlighting the two most interesting Web Summit hardware startups, he wrote:

“… CubeSensor, from a company based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, is really part of a much bigger picture: smart homes. If you link devices like this with smart meters and even rudimentary home-automation systems, you start to get something useful.”

You can see Marko’s 30 second pitch for WSJ below:

TheJournal.ie also featured our “life-enhancing Cubes”, including a short demonstration by yours truly:

You can get an even closer look of our glowing Cubes in the video, posted by Web Summit’s official YouTube channel:

A video of our Leon pitching should also be available in a few days; we’ll add it when it’s posted online.

Thanks again to everyone who visited us at the Web Summit. It’s been a pleasure to talk to you and make the Cubes glow in your hands. We’re now starting with the production of our first batch and are looking forward to start shipping our first CubeSensors in a couple of weeks.
